COVID-19 has changed everything for everybody. Even with lockdown easing, many people are still choosing to stay at home. But that doesn’t mean that your car has to sit uncared for, gathering dust. In this blog, I want to write about mobile detailing, including when it is and isn’t suitable. Rest assured as professional car detailers; Black River Details, based in Petersfield, will always operate to ensure maximum safety for our clients during these uncertain times.
Car Detailers – Operating in COVID times:
I’ve had some requests for mobile detailing services recently. While mobile detailing certainly has its place in the current environment it also has a few drawbacks. The main limitation is the type of detailing work that we can carry out in this manner.
The ins and outs of mobile detailing:
At Black River Details, I like to maintain a very high level of workmanship. I achieve this standard by completing the vast majority of work from our professional unit just outside of Petersfield in West Sussex. The unit offers a controlled environment that it is impossible to replicate on a driveway.
That said, mobile detailing does allow for a very convenient experience for our customers. There’s no need for them to take time out to drop the car off and they don’t need to worry about arranging alternative transport to and from the unit to drop off and collect their vehicle. So, for services like a maintenance wash, mobile detailing can be quite appropriate.
Mobile detailing – What we can and can’t do:
If you’re wondering what we, as professional car detailers, can complete using a mobile service, as well as what we can’t… Here’s a quick breakdown.
What we can do:
- Maintenance wash
- Interior details
- Engine bay detailing
- Protection detail package
- Full decontamination
- Headlight restorations
What we can’t do:
- Paint correction
- Ceramic coating
- Glass coating
- Wheel coating
- Any service that takes multiple days
A general rule of thumb is that mobile detailing restricts me to services that take a day or less. If a job takes two or more days, leaving the car overnight means it can gather dirt and dust. Additionally, other environmental factors can interfere with coatings or some stages of polishing. The biggest issue professional car detailers face when it comes to mobile detailing is the weather. Quite simply, a rainy day will stop play, calling a halt to even some of the services we would normally consider as mobile-detailing friendly.
Any type of coating work must be done at our car detailer’s unit. Ceramic coatings need to stay in a completely dry and temperature-controlled environment after application for the initial curing. Following this process ensures a long-lasting and durable finish that we simply cannot achieve when working outside.
Unfortunately, the outdoor environment and weather conditions always compromise the standards of mobile detailing. So, if you can get your car to our car detailers studio in Petersfield, then you will always get the best possible result. If you can’t, some mobile detailing services can still be a viable option.

Changes we have made to ensure customer safety:
Finally, as part of this article, I’d like to touch on the changes that we have implemented to ensure customer safety.
- On both mobile jobs and those that take place at our Petersfield unit, we are taking contactless forms of payment and maintaining social distancing according to government guidelines.
- We are sanitising all vehicle touch points before the vehicle is collected or completed.
- We wear gloves when working on vehicles and during handover.
- Collections and drop-offs at our premises are taking place outside the unit only. This protects customers and keeps the unit sanitary.
- We use anti-microbial cleaners wherever possible.
